Becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah is an important milestone in Jewish life. At the Jewish Center of the Moriches, preparation is part of an ongoing process of Jewish learning, worship, community participation, and personal growth.

Our goal is not simply to prepare a student for one special day, but to help each young person develop the knowledge, confidence, and connection to Jewish life that will continue beyond the ceremony.

Students participate in Hebrew and Jewish studies and become increasingly familiar with Shabbat worship and congregational life. As they prepare for Bar or Bat Mitzvah, they learn to read Hebrew, lead portions of the Shabbat morning service, chant from the Torah and Haftarah, and prepare a D’var Torah reflecting on the weekly Torah portion.

 

Regular participation in Shabbat services is an important part of this preparation. Familiarity with the prayers, melodies, sanctuary, and customs of the congregation helps students experience their Bar or Bat Mitzvah not as an isolated performance, but as a meaningful step within the life of the Jewish community.

Students are also encouraged to undertake a mitzvah project involving community service, charitable work, or another expression of tikkun olam—our responsibility to help repair the world.

 

We recognize that every child learns differently. When a student has particular learning needs, the Cantor, teacher, student, and family can work together to create an individualized and meaningful Bar or Bat Mitzvah experience that celebrates the student’s abilities and strengths.

Bar and Bat Mitzvah is also a communal celebration. We encourage students, families, classmates, and members of the congregation to support one another by participating in these important moments in the life of our community.

Specific requirements regarding Hebrew School participation, service attendance, scheduling, synagogue membership, and other preparations are provided to families as part of the JCM B’nei Mitzvah program.
